Premature Journal Bearing Failure

Dear All,

Would like to post this question I received in my email and would like to comment on it.

Hi,

I am practicing condition monitoring engineer over here in Nigeria. I dont know if you can be of help to an incipient problem i am facing  with one of my gas injection compressor engine.

The unit was newly overhauled, journal bearings changed. I do carried out vibration check on this unit, there is no  significant vibration rise in amplitude compare to the initail reading before overhauled. But just recently we find some metal fillings on the filter end. we have to open up only to find out it is one of the middle journal bearing of the crankshaft that has weared .

What do u believe is the possible cause of this sudden bearing failure.

I am looking forward to your early response.

Best regards,

Lawrence
